Los Angeles Job Market Getting “Healthier”

Across the country and across the state, study after study and survey after survey shows that the health-care industry is set to experience explosive growth over the next few years– even as other industries suffer in a down economy. A new report by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) shows that Los Angeles is the latest city projected to add massive numbers of jobs in the medical field.

According to the Los Angeles County Projection Highlights report, “More than half of the fastest growing occupations are in Health or Community and Social Service related fields.”

But even as the entire medical industry expands, the majority of the newly created jobs are entry-level support positions. Medical Technicians, Vocational Nurses, Pharmacy Technicians and Medical Billing specialists will be in high demand as new facilities are opened to care for aging Baby Boomers and the industry continues the trend of decentralizing health care.

This is borne out by the report on LA’s job market. The occupation with the greatest number of projected job openings is “Personal and Home Care Aides.” As with most careers, the key to getting one of the newly created jobs is education. In a recent LA Times OpEd piece Senator Darrell Steinberg said, “If we are going to get serious about jobs in this state, we must get serious about the direct relationship between jobs and education. We need to align public education with the jobs that will exist in a knowledge-intensive, innovation economy.”

Completing a Vocational Nursing, Medical Billing, Pharmacy Technician or Medical Assistant program like the ones offered at Valley College of Medical Careers gives job-seekers a competitive edge in getting in on the ground floor of an exciting and growing field.
